This exercise was about experimenting with different, more extreme points of view to add drama and dynamism to the narrative.
There were three parts that built together. They involved thumbnailing the same subject/location from above, straight on and below. The worked-up drawings explored combining several different points of view into the same image.
The sketching was done in three locations.
Location 1 – Ely Cathedral
The first three thumbnails are views from the Stained Glass Museum, which is in the transepts of Ely Cathedral with amazing interior views.
A young boy with a sketchbook came and sat directly opposite me, so I sketched him sketching me.
The second set of images are from an exhibition of costumes from various well know films and TV costume dramas.
Location 2 – Cafe Neros
I thought I’d try to use more imagination to create the above and below views of this couple drinking coffee and chatting.
I’m not sure how successful the final drawing is but it was an interesting exercise.
Location 3 – St Nicholas’ Church
The final series of images were made over two visits to the churchyard of St Nicholas’ Church in Thames Ditton.
A final drawing combining different parts from the observational thumbnails was made in the studio.
Reflections
- I find drawing people from different angles from imagination challenging. Practice needed.
- I liked the process in the final set of drawings. Using multiple thumbnails to explore different points of view, and using these to build a more finished drawing.
