London Comic Mart

London Comic Mart took place in three large rooms on the ground floor of The Royal National Hotel close to Russell Square.

I went to the event for market research, to learn about self publishing and possibly speak to independent comic artists. This was not the right event.

The comic mart consisted of over 120 trader stalls selling a huge range of items, from what I could tell the vast majority being Marvel and DC Comics. A few stalls had boxes of indie publications, and these are what I found interesting.

Before going in to the event I listed a number of questions, most of which I couldn’t answer. I updated the notes after the event.

Reflections

  • I bought a range of indie comics selected because they included a range of different visual styles for my own reference.
  • I was surprised that there wasn’t more visual diversity on show.
  • Where were the British/European graphic novels/comics?
  • MCM Comic Con London between 28th-30th October 2022 features independent artists and creators, and that is where I hope to get answers to my questions.
